Shooting Star Update - Day 1A - 7th in chips

Posted by Fox on Tuesday, March 9th 2010 12:37 pm

My table on day 1A was definitely the worst of the bunch. This tournament will always have rough fields because of all the bounties, but our table was particularly nasty. I started the day with Gavin Smith two to my left and Steve Brecher (last year's winner) on his left. No one else at the table was a real slouch either. At one point we have Smith and Brecher, Gavin Griffin, Mike Matusow and Jesus Ferguson at the table all at once. All but Griffin were at the table for mostof the day.

The Mouth didn't like it when I put him to the test on the river in hour 6 and actually made a formal declaration of war on the whole table. He singled me out as the reason and there was much cursing, though none of it was terribly offensive. Mike is actually a really nice guy, but I think he nearly had a meltdown after our big river hand.

I got to talk some theory with Chris Ferguson, including an interesting question about optimal shoving ranges with different stack sizes. It's scary how smart he is.

I didn't run incredibly hot, but I caught a few cards and the one beat I took only cost me about 25k I had to split a pot after I got the money in as a huge favorite on the turn. I had to be very cautious and pick my spots all day with all the strong players at the table, which actually kept me on my toes. At the end of the day I had 84,100, well behind the chip leader, but good enough for 7th in chips after Day 1A and a significant chip lead at my table.

When they were counting the chips for the chip lead bonus Matusow said "You couldn't have $140k if you won every pot all day at this table." and he hit it right on the head. We all should have gotten a bonus just for surviving the day at that nightmare table. Ferguson, Smith, and Griffin were gone by the end of the day, butI wa still hapy to know a redraw would hopefully get me away from Matusow and Brecher, both very strong players.

Updates can be found at Bay101live.com

I'll be enjoying my day off today and then tomorrow it's back to work on Day 2.

The guy in seat 2

Posted by Fox on Monday, February 8th 2010 3:45 pm

In no particular order, I have compiled a list of the reasons I did not screw with the guy in seat two.

1. He weighs more than I do and very little of that is fat. I think most of that weight is actually volcanic rock. The forearms as big as my legs were a bit intimidating too...

Happy Holidays (No Webinar Tonight)

Not nearly as much fun as last year's UB Party where I wore a bathrobe all night, but not bad. Didn't have enough time to give Phil Hellmuth much s***. Had a ton of free drinks on UB's tab though, that's always a bonus! More parties to come and I'm playing the main event unsponsored! It would be fun to make the final table and show up as the only guy who didn't look liek a Nascar reject with patches everywhere...

Posted by Fox on Sunday, June 28th 2009 5:05 pm

We leave in the morning, should be in Vegas tomorrow late afternoon. It's part vacation and part poker/work trip, so I'm only going toplay the main event and probably go to PokerPalooza for part of a day. I'll be at most of hte parties, though I haven't managed to wrangle an invite to the PokerStars party yet, so if you have a way to get the two of us (I'll be with my new wife) in to the Stars party shoot me a PM here on PXF...

Minnesota Poker in Jeopardy

Posted by Fox on Wednesday, April 29th 2009 8:29 pm

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety announced today that it has asked all of the major internet service providers in Minnesota to block access to online gambling sites, much as Kentucky tried to do over the last few months. I don't have a lot of time right now, I've been on the phone with people from the PPA, local reporters, and lawyers all day, but I would like to know if any PXF members from Minnesota want to help out...

Rough Trip

Posted by Fox on Thursday, April 23rd 2009 5:10 am

It's easy to forget how annoying tournament poker can be after a few good outings. My last two trips to Vegas and Reno were very profitable, so I forgot exactly how frustrating it is to have a bad series of tournaments and just be getting crushed over and over...

Off to Vegas

Posted by Fox on Monday, April 13th 2009 12:07 pm

I'm headed to Vegas this afternoon to play the WSoP Circuit events at Caesar's and maybe a few of the Venetian Deep Stack events. It's purely a poker trip, nothing fancy, so I'm staying at the Imperial Palace because it's cheap. When I'm playing cards I'm never in my hotel to do anything but sleep anyway, so there's no reason to spend much money on a room and IP is right across from Caesar's...

Great New Monitor

Posted by Fox on Thursday, April 9th 2009 9:51 pm

I got a new monitor today and I love it, so I thought I would post it here in case anyone wants to get one too. For $400 including shipping it's a steal for a huge monitor. And since I have two desktop machines, I can now use a switch to bounce between them and have them connected toth same monitor and keyboard...

What kinds of video do you want to see?

Posted by Fox on Wednesday, April 8th 2009 6:57 pm

I'm not looking for opinions on which specific games or buy-in levels you want to see, that will be for another time and I already have my plate full with a bunch of videos I have promised people on the forums.

What I need your opinion on is the type of videos you think are the best for me to make...

Chopped Liver?

Posted by Fox on Monday, April 6th 2009 5:43 am

So this hand just happened and I thought I would test a posting format. It's basically Gavin Smith calling my button raise in O8 from the small blind with a weak hand. I thought he might have some respect for the fact that I'm currently beating up the game pretty good, but I guess I get no respect...

Buying Hand Histories?

Posted by Fox on Friday, April 3rd 2009 6:23 am

I need some opinions. I review software for pokersoftware.com, and through reviewing the major hand history resellers for an article, I met the guy who runs HHdealer.com, which is definitely the best of the bunch right now. He offered to provideme with some hand histories so that I could have some stats on my opponents while making videos at level where I didn't usually play...

Huge Rebuy Score!

Posted by Fox on Saturday, March 28th 2009 5:55 pm

I had a few beers last night. Maybe a few more than a few. When I've had more than a beer or two I don't usually play poker, but I really felt like playing last night so I bought in to a few very small cash game tables and a $2 rebuy on Cake. I ended the rebuy period with a way below average stack, and honestly was hardly paying attention to the table at all except to play my cards when it was my turn to act...
