Cash games in Vegas

Posted by Fox on Saturday, June 8th 2013 9:51 am

I've already covered where to play tournaments in Vegas, but I get a lot of questions about where to play cash games and most people flock to the least profitable spots to play cash games against other solid players, local pros, and ultra-tight bonus grinders. If you are playing poker for money, then go where the soft players are and get away from the strong players. If you just want to say that you played poker in a room that will make you sound cool, then tell everyone you played cash at The Rio or The Venetian and ignore the rest of this post.

You will probably be playing $1/2 or $1/3 no-limit holdem games, and the best places for those games are the less glamorous rooms at lower end hotels. The Venetian will be the toughest place for these lower limit games because so many local grinders will be playing there. They like the room because the rake is low and the tables are comfortable with a wide range of tables to choose from. If you are used to the room and know who the regulars are, then it's probably just fine to play there, but for the rest of us it's better to go where every table is soft and we don't have to worry about table selection. The Aria is nearly as tough as the Venetian. While there will certainly be soft players in both rooms, they won't be as soft as some of the lesser known rooms.

The Rio will have a huge number of games and lots of action, but the chairs are uncomfortable, the food is expensive, and the dealers are clueless. And last year there were many instances of extra cards in the deck and nothing was done about it. The cameras don't work well in the Rio, and there are better places to play smaller no-limit games.

Caesars has good $1/3 games, and the slightly higher stake can increase your win rate, though the rake is slightly higher. You will find more annoying drunk idiots at Caesars, but if you can tolerate them you will find that they lose tremendous amounts of money. The room is nice, the food is good, and the chairs are above average.

The smaller rooms are where the real money is. Put in a few sessions at a place like Planet Hollywood or Harrahs and you will see why they are so profitable. Your opponents will be lost, and some of them will be playing in a casino for the first time. If there is a big sporting event, like the NBA finals happening right now, Planet Hollywood will be particularly good because the sports book is right next door and the gamblers will come play poker and pay more attention to the basketball game than the poker table.

If you are playing at a room with lots of table choices, look for a game where people are happy, drinking, and laughing. If they are having fun, then they are gambling, and that's what you want. Big stacks aren't necessarily good, they often mean that the players have been there a long time and the fish have all been busted. Shorter stacks will often indicate weak players, and it's not like that is all the money you can win. Once they go broke they will rebuy or leave and another player will take their spot and you can bust them too. If your table is quiet and tight, get a table change right away - don't waste any time on a bad table.

Vegas Summer Tournaments

Posted by Fox on Thursday, May 9th 2013 1:24 pm

A few people have asked about my summer schedule and asked advice about what they should be playing when they go out to the World Series of Poker. I set my own schedule a few weeks ago, covering as many mixed game events as possible in the 31 days I’ll be in Vegas, with some no-limit events at the Rio, mostly $1,500 bracelet events.

If you, like most players, won’t be in Vegas for more than a week or two, you’ll want to make the most of your time in town and you’ll be hoping to make some money. Be careful with your bankroll, and decide what your max buy-in will be, and stick with it. I definitely think some events are much softer than others, so I've put together a quick guide to finding the softest fields.

Event Schedules

Venetian Deep stack Schedule

Wynn Classic Schedule

Caesars Mega Stacks Schedule

Binion’s Poker Classic

WSoP Schedule

Golden Nugget Grand Poker Series Schedule

Aria Classic Schedule

Where to Play with Buy-ins of Less than $500

There are so many good options at this buy-in size. The Golden Nugget and Caesars both have series right in this range, though the rake is fairly high in both. The Rio Daily Deepstacks are a good value too, with huge fields full of donkeys, but you may end up waiting an hour in line to register for them. That will never be a problem at The Nugget or Caesars, and you’ll be playing in a quiet and comfortable room with reasonably priced food and drink nearby at both locations, while you will be paying out the nose for those things at the Rio, as well as playing in the middle of the mess that is the WSoP. Even Binion’s has a good selection of smaller buy-in events.

The Venetian Deep Stacks are a good option too, though you may be seated close to some annoying slot machines and you may have a line to register, though it won’t compare to the ridiculous line at the Rio. The rake is pretty high at the Venetian too, but they have a great selection of events and the fields will be fairly large for the smaller buy-in events.

The Wynn has $400 and $500 buy-in events from June 7th to the 21st, with a good structure. I love playing at The Wynn, the tables are good, the service is good, and there is good, fast, within 50 feet of the tournament area.

Your best bet is probably to play whatever event is close to you, since cab fare would be much higher than the difference in rake. If you are downtown, The Nugget and Binion’s are the way to go, if you are at the Rio then play the deep stack events, and if you are on the strip, play wherever is closest to you with the buy-in you like on that day.

Where to Play with Buy-ins of More than $500

If you are playing buy-ins great than $500, you are primarily concerned with finding the softest fields, and there is a huge disparity. Venetian DS events with buy-ins over $600 have very tough fields and should probably be avoided. Special events like Binion’s and Caesars main events will be tough, but not as tough as the Venetian fields. The softest fields will be at the Rio, and don’t be afraid of the small number of starting chips, the structure is better than it seems. Half the fields in $1,000 or $1,500 or events will be clueless, just take advantage of them early while they still have chips.

Cash Games

There will be cash games everywhere, and a huge number of games at The Rio, but the best places to play most games will be away from the horde of grinders. The Venetian and Rio will be the toughest games, though there will still be a lot of soft spots. If you are playing $2/5, The Wynn will probably have the softest games, while smaller games will be best at places like Planet Hollywood where there won’t be any pros and most of your opponents will be sports bettors. As long as you get away from the few biggest rooms, the cash games will be fantastic.

This is a repost from my blog at FoxPoker.com

Where the Heck is Fox?

Posted by Fox on Saturday, March 16th 2013 7:49 pm

I know it's been awhile since I had any content up on PXF. My apologies. Other projects have taken up my time lately and this is the busiest time of the year for the Mid-States Poker Tour, so my job as their ambassador has kept me on the road a lot lately. I'm still playing, still grinding, and still paying the bills, mostly playing live games and live tournaments. I'm also still writing a column for Bluff every month and finding time for the podcast every week. Add in my gig with Grinder U doing seminars and strategy, and pile some private students on top of that, and I don't seem to have a free moment.

Things are about to slow down for the MSPT which should give me a little more time to make some videos for PXF before the WSoP. I'll be in Vegas for most of the series with a week at home in the middle for my wedding anniversary and a ball game with my family.

Playing live so much I haven't had much use for all the software I used to rely on at online tables, though I do use Poker Notes Live in my phone, which is a slick little ap that allows you to take notes on players at a live table much like you do online. There is a version of the app for Android and iphone, and it's $0.99 a month, which is a great value for what it does.

If you have an interest in seeing a particular type of content from me here on PXF, please let me know and I'll see what I can do to make it happen. You can email me at blindstraddle@gmail.com or hit me up on twitter @foxpokerfox and I'll see you on the forums and with some content here on PXF a little more often in a month or so.

NBC Heads UP Championship Field Announced

Posted by Fox on Friday, January 18th 2013 2:35 pm

So the field for the NBC Heads Up Championship was announced today. Like any list of the top performers in a field, there are lots of disagreements, but the list is definitely comprised of solid players. There are certainloy a few players who aren't in the top 100 heads up players in the world (see Jennifer Tilly and Chris Moneymaker), but it's not just a championship, it's a television show and there has to be some compromise...

FeltStars Shuts Down Part 1

Leaving FeltStars

Posted by Fox on Monday, October 1st 2012 3:06 am

When I signed with FeltStars a few months ago, I thought I had finally found the right place. I would be rewarded for bringing in players, I was able to work with the pro team and affiliate program to teach all the pros how to market themselves, and I would have a place to play online again on a regular basis...

Back Home!

Posted by Fox on Wednesday, July 18th 2012 1:59 pm

After 49 days in Vegas, I'm finally back home in Minnesota. It's 78 degrees here, my wife and my dogs are here, and I'm sleeping in my own bed. Who would have thought I would be so happy to be in Minnesota? The road gets old, even when I'm in a city I like (Vegas), and after a rough summer where I had a bunch of close calls and no big win, I am very happy to be back to the same old grind...

Enemies of Freedom

Posted by Fox on Wednesday, May 23rd 2012 12:35 pm

Some of the groups who supported the UIGEA in 2006 are back, pushing for a federal ban on online gaming. These people want a federal law made to tell us what we can and can not do in our own homes on our own computers. They want a bigger and more powerful federal government with more laws and they want those laws based on their religious views regardless of what their fellow citizens believe...

Marked Cards?

Posted by Fox on Monday, April 30th 2012 4:26 pm

Apparently when you notice marked cards at the table you should just keep your mouth shut and act oblivious. Clearly I won't do that, but I'm pretty annoyed that some idiot filed a cheating complaint with the Iowa gaming commission because I pointed out that the aces were marked in a deck at the final table of a circuit event...

Seriously? Really Cereus? You didn't think that maybe, after being part of the biggest cheating scandals in online poker history, that you might want to go ahead and at least use the standard encryption that everyone else in the industry uses? And you didn't fix it until someone else called you out on it? Where have we heard that story before? Here's a link that shows that they finally installed SSL on their software -

I played a few multi-table sit and go tournament last night while doing some research on the new autorate system in Holdem Manager for a student. The good news is I won the $26 x 45 man tournamnet, so I'm going to make a video of it, and I know lots of poeple are interested in that...

A Small Win

Posted by Fox on Wednesday, July 8th 2009 6:00 pm

After the unpleasant bounce from teh WSoP main event I took a day off from poker, but last night I was back at it. I decided to have a coacktail or twoand play some low limit stuff and just take it easy for the night. I entered a $5 rebuy because I thought it would be fun while I played some Omaha cash games, and just like the lasttime I played a micro rebuy on Cake, I ran deep...

Rough Day

Posted by Fox on Sunday, July 5th 2009 4:26 pm

Today was my day 1 at the WSoP Main Event. I say "was" even though it's awfully early in the day, so you can imagine that things didn't go as planned. Here's the story, and then I'm going out to try and enjoy the day.

It was 43 minutes in, still at 50 and 100 blinds...

UB Party!

Posted by Fox on Tuesday, June 30th 2009 5:17 am

Not nearly as much fun as last year's UB Party where I wore a bathrobe all night, but not bad. Didn't have enough time to give Phil Hellmuth much s***. Had a ton of free drinks on UB's tab though, that's always a bonus! More parties to come and I'm playing the main event unsponsored! It would be fun to make the final table and show up as the only guy who didn't look liek a Nascar reject with patches everywhere...

I'll be at most of hte parties, though I haven't managed to wrangle an invite to the PokerStars party yet, so if you have a way to get the two of us (I'll be with my new wife) in to the Stars party shoot me a PM here on PXF...

Minnesota Poker in Jeopardy

Posted by Fox on Wednesday, April 29th 2009 8:29 pm

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety announced today that it has asked all of the major internet service providers in Minnesota to block access to online gambling sites, much as Kentucky tried to do over the last few months. I don't have a lot of time right now, I've been on the phone with people from the PPA, local reporters, and lawyers all day, but I would like to know if any PXF members from Minnesota want to help out...

Rough Trip

Posted by Fox on Thursday, April 23rd 2009 5:10 am

It's easy to forget how annoying tournament poker can be after a few good outings. My last two trips to Vegas and Reno were very profitable, so I forgot exactly how frustrating it is to have a bad series of tournaments and just be getting crushed over and over...

Off to Vegas

Posted by Fox on Monday, April 13th 2009 12:07 pm

I'm headed to Vegas this afternoon to play the WSoP Circuit events at Caesar's and maybe a few of the Venetian Deep Stack events. It's purely a poker trip, nothing fancy, so I'm staying at the Imperial Palace because it's cheap. When I'm playing cards I'm never in my hotel to do anything but sleep anyway, so there's no reason to spend much money on a room and IP is right across from Caesar's...

Huge Rebuy Score!

Posted by Fox on Saturday, March 28th 2009 5:55 pm

I had a few beers last night. Maybe a few more than a few. When I've had more than a beer or two I don't usually play poker, but I really felt like playing last night so I bought in to a few very small cash game tables and a $2 rebuy on Cake. I ended the rebuy period with a way below average stack, and honestly was hardly paying attention to the table at all except to play my cards when it was my turn to act...
