The Tournament Trail

Posted by Fox on Monday, January 16th 2012 1:43 am

I'll be making the video preview for live tournaments during February and March in a few days, so if you know of an interesting tournament series in your area, please let me know about it. Anything with multiple tournaments with buy-ins larger than $200 or any single event $1,000 or larger would be of interest.

Speaking of tournaments, my pal Bryan Mileski runs the Mid States Poker Tour, and they are kicking a***, with a ton of $1,100 events this year and huge guarantees. Check them out at msptpoker.com

While I am working on some other projects, there are so many good tournaments in my area lately that I may be able to make a living primarily as a live tournament player and Black Friday and online poker can both bite me!

Some great Interviews

Posted by Fox on Friday, January 6th 2012 8:26 pm

Piling up interviews for the Under The Gun podcast this week, with the next three episodes already covered. We interviewed Kristin from Poker Refugees this week and learned about the process a potential client goes through to move to another country to play online poker. It was great stuff. I also did an interview with top limit holdem pro Palamino, a monster player and a great interview! We'll also be interviewing out favorite live tournamnet director this week, and Brian Mileski, CEO of the quickly growing Mid States Poker Tour drops by. Great stuff and all good interviews!

We still wish we had more reader mail and feedback on the podcast. Let us know what you think, give us some ideas, and ask any questions you like by emailing us at utgpodcast@gmail.com.

As for me, I am in the winter doldrums. Running bad, probably not playing my best, and annoyed at the lack of good games in Minnesota. Went drinking with JohnnyGstacks and a few other pros a couple nights ago and had a good time. I definitely needed to get out and get away from poker. Some guys at the bar kept inviting us to their home game and were shocked when we told them we weren't interested. We play poker for a living. Woudl you invite a plumber over to work on some pipes and be shocked when he didn't jump at the chance to do even more plumbing!

The good news is that there is a $500 or a $1k nearby almost every weekend between now and the end of February, so if I can just win a couple of those I should be in good shape. The bad news? Tax time is coming. Ugh. Time to drag out all those receipts and make another promise to myself that I'll better track of my expenses this year.

Happy Holidays!!

Posted by Fox on Saturday, December 24th 2011 1:00 am

We have a little bit of good news for the holiday, the Department of Justice has decided that the Wire Act of 1961 doesn't apply to online poker. We already knew that, and the idea that it would apply is ridiculous, but the DoJ does what they want regardless of the law all too frequently, and it's good news that they appear to be backing away from their attacks on online poker. Now that allof the real competition has been swept out of the way, and the government is changing it's position, we may see things moving forward in the coming months.

I have also had a great tournament run over the last two weeks in small tournaments here in Minnesota, with a chop and a 2nd place in consecutive weeks in the Wednesday $235. Cash games have been good too.

I recorded the videos for my series on heads up sit and go tournaments today, and they should be up on the site in January. I definitely ran into some interesting spots playing smaller buy-in heads up sngs, and was ableto show that there is still a little money to be made playing these even for US players.

I hope everyone enjoyed my pal JohnnyGStacks on the podcast, nice guy and a great player. If you have suggestions or questions about the podcast, don't forget to email us at utgpodcast@gmail.com.

Potential guests over the next month or two include noted psychologist and poker author Dr. Alan Schoonmaker, limit holdem specialist Kristin 'Palamino' Lawson, and a representative from the Poker Player's Alliance. Should be some fun shows.

Headed to Hammond

Posted by Fox on Thursday, October 13th 2011 7:41 pm

We still have a few tournaments left in our series here at Canterbury Park, but I'm headed to the Horseshoe in Hammond Indiana as soon as our $1,100 Main event is done this weekend. The series has been a bust for me so far, losing every race possible, but I think I'm still playing well, so I can't turn down a chance to play some more big tournaments when they are only about seven hours from home...

Winning Low-Limit Holdem by Lee Jones - Less necessary than the Kriger books, but great stuff if you are looking for more books on small fixed-limit games...

Live coaching in Seattle and Reno

There are some excellent 5-200 spread games in Seattle, and we'll be focused on how to beat those games as well as heading out to play them in the evenings...
