Fox's Bankroll Builder Project

Using the Project to Teach
Saturday, May 17th 2008 5:03 am

I was pondering a bunch of the questions that came from people who read the intro post about the project yesterday. I was having trouble with exactly how to pursue this thing. I was hired to teach cash games here on PXF, but in the first project I found that single table tournaments were a faster way to make money at the micro levels, so which do I play? I also know that I will move very quickly through the micro levels, so the amount of teaching I have time to do at the lower levels is likely to be fairly short, so how do I find enough material to teach people about them? Someone also asked about the number of hours it would take me to reach $50,000 and if I had any projections.

Lots of tough questions, but I think my philosophy on the project will answer most of them. You see the key is not that I was hired here to teach CASH games, but that I was hired to TEACH. I wasn't hired to make $50k, nor do I currently need to build up a $50k bankroll, I'm doing just fine with my bankroll lately. So the goal of this project is going to be to teach, and while I assume I will reach $50k in less than a year even though I'll only be playing part time on the project, I don't need to be in a hurry.

I will be playing mostly cash games because that is what I was hired to do, and I think I can still move through the micro levels nicely. My guides from the first project will be available on PXF very soon. They are detailed guides on $5, $10, and $20 SNG's, and a lot of people have told me that they are quite useful. Each guide is around 4,000 words or 8 standard pages, and anything above the $20 level is probably best handled by Sheets and Beanmo anyway. In unrelated SNG news, a $550 HU SNG video I made was moved over from the pokerfox archives today and is available now in the training center.

So the updated plan is this -

I will play cash games, probably whatever I deem the most profitable for the level I am playing most of the time. I will probably stay at the micro levels longer than I need to, and one way to accomplish that will be buying the software with my winnings as I discussed in my first post. I'll be using HoldEm Manager to track my play right from the start, but I won't be using it to assist me in my play until I can afford to buy it out of the bankroll. I just want to have all my hands in a nice database so that I can post my stats here in the blog because I think the stats, and the things I can use them to teach, will be very helpful to a lot of beginning players.

I am using HoldEm Manager only because the small stakes edition can be bought for $55 and upgraded later, so a player with a small bankroll at the lower stakes could afford it most easily. I haven't decided if I like PokerTracker 3 better than HoldEm Manager yet, the two programs are fairly comparable and both seem to do a very good job. In a few weeks I should have reviews of both programs and a comparison of the two, but for now I just don't know them well enough.

I need to do some more research before I decide where to play and what free software programs will be the best, but I should have that figured out within a day or two and be ready to get started playing. I'll get a few days of playing in and then I'm off to Paris for a week starting Thursday.

That's all for now, I'll be back in a day or two with some free software that helps with multi-tabling and makes life easier, probably mostly AHK scripts, and my first play report. I'll also be revealing my screen name on the site I'm playing on and why I'm plaing there.

Any Chance of doing a video with the six tables being played at once?

I had forgotten about that Hunter, thanks! If any else has suggestions for free software I would love to hear them.

Hey Fox, Hunter from pokerfox here. You probably know this, but the HUD in HM is based on and developed by the same guy as the free Realtime Hud. Depending on where you are playing, this might be a good piece of initial software to use. http://www.holdemranger.com/realtime.html

As an avid player who doesn't have a lot of time to play as I used to (I am a soldier and I am working on a Masters Degree); and one that wants to rebuild his bankroll, I thank you for this series. Using the SNG Kelly info, I have raised my bankroll from around $330 to almost $700 in a week's worth of play playing around 4 games a day.

I play on a Mac, but most of the tracking software doesn't support a Mac. Would you recommend that I put a Windows based software on my Mac for poker?

Thanks again, and I welcome you to the site. I check back daily for updates on this project!!

Best Wishes,
RTK
