Fox's Bankroll Builder Project

Bankroll Builder RTHUD and Vista, and a stats update.
Friday, June 6th 2008 4:25 am

First of all, RTHUD, which I am using for this project until I decide to buy Hold'em Manager out of the bankroll, does not work with Windows Vista. If you are a Vista user you will probably want to buy the small stakes version of Hold'em Manager now if you are planning to follow along. If you are using Windows XP then you can watch the 28 minute video I made on setting up RTHUD to work with Stars and how to use it. Similar videos are on the way for Hold'em Manager and PT3.

I have done little more research on what games are the most profitable, but first we'll do a quick update on the current stats. If yours aren't as good as mine there are lots of reasons for that, but to be honest the biggest reason is that I've been on an awesome hot streak in the 1400 hands I've played for the project so far. My opponents are so bad sometimes that it doesn’t feel like a hot streak, but I know I can’t maintain 68 bb/100, it’s just not possible.

Here is my current profit graph from Hold Em Manager. As you can see I had a little downturn over the last 300 hands or so. For the last hour it really seemed like every hand I ran into a flopped set or had to fold because I missed entirely and my continuation bet was raised. The win rate is still awesome, I’m not concerned at all, it was just annoying.

SS_14

Here’s the current general stats. You can see my VP$IP is down to 22.7, partly because I’m consciously tightening up and partly because I didn’t get a lot of hands to play tonight. My PFR is up to 10% and climbing, which is entirely a function of my decision over the last few days to raise more often preflop and take control of the hands.

And here are the position stats. I’m losing money in middle position right now, but the sample size is just too small to give that any weight. Other than that everything looks pretty standard, looser as I get in to later position, and making more money in later position as well. There will be some neat stuff to do with position once I get a larger sample size.

Current Bankroll - $121.17

Hands Played – 1,395

Time Spent Playing – approximately 4 hours.

I’m looking in to the profitability of sit and go tournaments too. The number heavily favor sit and go play at the lower levels as the fastest way to build up a bankroll, and I my make the switch for a little while just to build up quickly and get out of the micros. Sit and go play at the micro levels is also much easier to teach, and I could probably whip up some guides that would turn most intermediate players in to real winners right away at the $5 level. I’ll look in to that more before I make a decision.

If it is the latest and greatest of Mac, you have the ability to have your system dual boot in either mac or windows. I think the program is called "boot camp" or something like that.

Fox...will you being doing screen shots in both PT and Holdem Manager? Any chance you moving away for it and using PT3 instead? I have a licensed edition of all of Poker Tracker products, including PT3 and don't want to have to pay for yet another license of something since joining the school. I did read you will be doing a comparison of the two in the coming weeks, guess I am just trying to sublimely plant a seed.

Maybe do a poll and see what majority of the people are using?

Talking about bankroll management. A cardplayer magazine video interview of Jared "TheWacoKidd" Hamby mentioned Fox's archive article in P5. About 7:50 into the interview http://www.cardplayer.com/tv/32265

Thanks Fox, I'll be looking foward to the Poker Tracker 3 video, I just got it and don't feel I'm using all the features available, esp. trying to get the stats combined from 2 different computers to one. Great Job on everything. Thanks Again

Fox: I'm just a casual player and I'm sure my sample size isn't big enough to give you the information you seek. Honestly, I don't know exactly how many of my 870 games sample is 5-6 dollars. Sharkscope may show you, I don't have a sub with them so I can't see the details. I've also only recently began to track my own stats. Sorry.

Also a MAC user. Hoping the poker world catches up!

Thanks for your blog and training videos Fox! My bankroll is improving. I have no patience for micro-limit lay myself, kudos to you for enduring those levels!

I think at the $5 level, a 20% ROI is maintainable on the Single table SNG. I also have about a 50% ROI on the 90 man, but I only have 69 played. I don't think that it would be advisable for someone to build the initial $100 investment with 90 mans.
You don't want to build your bankroll too much playing SNGs in my opinion if you are planning to jump to cash. I think MOST players are going to benefit more playing lower level cash games and learning to adapt as they move up the cash limits as opposed to building in SNGs and the jumping into a cash game they are not ready for.
Enjoying the project, but I haven't been able to use any software like Hold Em Manager because I sold my PC and have been using a MacBook Pro now to play at FTP and PokerStars.

Best Wishes,
RTK

How big is your sample size Fire? I have been trying to figure out how high an ROI can be at the micros, and all the sharkscope leader boards are telling me completely different ranges.

Hmm...I don't know if this is good or bad for me. These levels are so bad, I have 35% roi in the 5-6 dollar range.

There goes the neighborhood.

H.K. most of those games on sharkscope are old, and the sample size is pretty small. I am definitely a winning SNG player, and in fact I made most of my living playing SNG's on Party a few years ago, but the sharkscope stats of an 11% ROI with an avg stake of $94 really don't mean anything because the sample size is too small.

I am looking at multi's and single table SNG play, I'll have to figure out which is more profitable.

I would love to see some micro sit and go play guides from you. Sounds like that might be the way to go.
