Day #5 – Put it all together
The first four days gave you all the ingredients, but we still don’t have a Cake. And I love Cake, so I insist that you make some. If you start with your ability to know your opponents, and your ability to estimate ranges, you should get a pretty good feel for your opponents cards in many of the hands you play today. As you play those hands, write them down with your range estimates and save them for analysis at the end of your session.
Once you have five or ten hands to analyze, run them through Poker Stove to see how they play against your range, and use the range estimator to find out how often they will fold. If you think the button raised with the top 25% of hands, and will only call your all-in with the top 15%, then you have a 40% chance of a fold.
Once you know what your fold equity is, you can run your hand against the range of hands that your opponent will call with. Running your hand against the top 15% will tell you exactly how much equity you have in the pot if you are called.
Now you can take your fold equity, your win equity, and the negative equity from losing the hand, and actually understand your play in terms of chip EV (cEV). You’ll need to run the hand through an ICM calculator if you are close to the final table, and don’t take very tiny edges of less than 1% of your stack in most cases, but otherwise the cEV is reasonable to use in most cases.
This process can be complicated, so you’ll probably want to watch my video on hand analysis and read the article that goes with it. The spreadsheet that is available for download from the article on hand analysis will simplify the process for you and help speed up the analysis. Sheet’s spreadsheets are also useful for this type of analysis, and if you want to post a few of them on the forums here at PXF I’m sure the members and pros will be happy to critique them and I would be happy to help if you send me a PM pointing to the post.
